The battle of Stalingrad was the begining of the end for Hitler. Russia and Nazi Germany fought in one of the wars most crutial battles. In southwestern russia there is a town called Volgograd. This town used to have fire spreading around the city, bodies on the ground, sounds of gun shots, and kaos. On August 23, 1943 the luftwaffa (Air Force) reduced the city to rubble. There were no front lines during this battle. It was room to room, sniper against sniper. The german army executed thousands of citizens in stalingrad. Either side would have rather shot themselves instead of being captured by the opposing force. There was no mercy. Hitler's army took over Stalingrad very easily but left small pockets of russian shock troopers in the city. He felt he had won the city over and did not pursue the Russian soldiers. They began fighting back and the Russians brought in reinforcements. They needed the city because it was a magor industrial city so they would fight to the last man if they had to. Massive battles took place all over the city. Many snipers made there name known during this time. The Germans slowly lost momentum. Then the Russians siezed the Volga river which was the river that bordered the city. Troops flooded in and the Russians had hidden many tanks in the country side. All at ounce the tanks slowly crushed the German pockets of soldiers. In the end German soldiers would cling to the wings of cargo planes because of the Russian soldiers that would surely kill them. Hitler lost an entire army and Russia started to push Germany all the way back to Berlin.
